THE END OF LAKEWOOD FARM

By Izzy

Many events led to the closing of the zoo at Lakewood Farm.  First of all, the storm in July 23,1933.  There was a possibility that it was a tornado .  There was $15,000 in damage to the farm. Luckily no animals were hurt.  Second of all, the state didn't purchase the land.  Getz offered the farm for $625,000 and it could be paid back over 20 years.  Sadly the state did not agree.  The last reason the zoo closed was because of the Great Depression of October 1929.  First the stock market had a crash. Then many people lost money, and finally increased poverty happened.  The closing of the zoo was a result of many factors.

THE CLOSING OF GETZ ZOO

By Joe

Many events led to the closing of the Lakewood Farm Zoo in 1933.  On June 23, 1933, a big storm struck the zoo and it might have been a tornado.  That did $15,000 in damage, but luckily no animals were hurt.
In October of 1929 the Great Depression happened.  The stock market crashed so many people became poor. People had less money so they would travel to the zoo less often.
Mr.Getz was also getting old and his two sons were in their twenties and starting up their own families. The zoo closed because of these unfortunate events.

THE CLOSING OF GETZ FARM IN 1933

By Caroline

Many events led to the closing of the zoo at Lakewood Farm in 1933. First, it was the storm. It started on July 23,1933. The storm was a tornado. Well it was a possibility that it was a tornado. When the storm hit Getz Farm, it got ruined! So Getz had to pay 15,000 dollars to fix the farm! Next it was Getz's age. It was a big problem. He was close to 70 years old. That's a pretty old age. However when he was 70, his two sons were in their 20s. Then it cost to keep running the zoo. Many employers had to get paid. Getz also had to upkeep of the animals. However the hardest part was Getz had to pay 100,000 dollars a year to keep running the farm! As you can see the closing of the zoo was a result of many factors.
