LAKEWOOD FARM-GETZ
LAKEWOOD FARM- GEORGE GETZ
Going to the Zoo
In the fall of 2019, Lakewood Elementary students left their school to go back in time along the shores of Lake Michigan. They discovered that not far from their school was a zoo complete with lions, tigers, and bears! This experience motivated these students to uncover the truth about Lakewood Farm. Please enjoy our findings.
A CHALLENGING PROJECT
Knowledge Meets Curiosity
With the help of West Ottawa Public Schools, The Historical Ottawa Beach Society, Valerie VanHeest, Ken and Patti Bing, and FuturePrep'd of the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, Lakewood 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders embarked on a year long study of the development of Lakewood Farm. Our journey began with a presentation by local historian Valerie Van Heest who sparked the students curiousity with photos and stories of Holland long ago. Students were then invited to see the Getz property as it stands today by Patti and Ken Bing who have spent countless hours restoring the grounds. Students then began self selected research projects on animals, people, and the history of the farm. Throughout our journey students were able to apply their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
"Money is tawdry when compared to friendship. I love Lakewood Farm, it is my only extravagance, but I love it because it seems to have proven a mecca for the children, and I love children."
